please do not leave me in the rain alone
for we have come too far together to be on our own
and i don't remember what it's like to walk without holding your hand.
the pavement is overgrown with sodden weeds
and the moss is damp and slippery beneath our feet
taking turns leading each other across the waterlogged remains of this land.
but one day, the rain seeps between our grasp
and our hands slip apart from each other at last
and now i can't breathe properly because the flood has found my lungs.
my hands are cold, my hair is wet, the water rises
the eerie apocalyptic serenity finally drowns and dies
and maybe now, where we were once two, i find myself alone and just one.
