Animal and Momose Amane (mini-essay)

Animal was Momose Amane’s second cover for Project Milgram. Amane in particular frequently has animal symbolism and motifs – she got in trouble and was abused for taking care of a cat, she’s represented by a cat in Magic, animals are regulars in her MVs, and now she has a cover for the song Animal.

By far the most popular interpretation of the original Animal seems to be to interpret the lyrics as at least suggestive. While the lyrics can definitely be interpreted that way, I would say that Amane’s cover of Animal is more along the lines of the animal symbolism and rebellion and an overall more literal interpretation of the lyrics, rather than the more suggestive tone the song can have in some interpretations.

For Amane, Animal is about rebelling against the rules she has to follow as part of her cult, the rules that prevented her from taking care of the cat, the rules that rejected her and punished her and the cat. If Positive Parade is about keeping up that presentation, Animal is about rejecting that, about getting to do the things Amane wants to do but isn’t allowed to.

While the covers are not directly related to the prisoners, they are definitely selected with different prisoners’ themes and motifs in mind – Amane did not get Animal arbitrarily. In that sense, Positive Parade and Animal tell a similar story to Magic and The Purge March, maybe even to the point that they could be analysed as an alternative depiction of Amane’s story in that way.
